Dear Friends, In the fall of 1863, the nation continued suffering in the anguish and turmoil of the Civil War. The blood of brothers, families and neighbors pitted against each other soaked the farmlands in Gettysburg to southern cities like Vicksburg earlier that year. The foundation of a united country — and the great American experiment — dangled on the precipice of extinction. What was there to be thankful for at a moment such as that? Yet, it was in that moment, amid the throes of war and even personal strife that President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation — that the last Thursday in November be offered as a day of thanksgiving. He acknowledged the beautiful freedoms, wealth, harvest, and life bestowed on the country by the Almighty despite the ongoing struggles, while praying for Him “to heal the wounds of the nation” and to restore “peace, harmony, tranquility and Union.” In this past year of great division infused in seemingly all aspects of life, with neighbor pitted against neighbor in the public square, social media, stores, schools, and our homes, what do we have to be thankful for? For me, I’m deeply grateful for my family’s love, my health and your continued support of my campaign both financially and, more importantly, for your prayers. I also take this moment to offer a similar prayer President Lincoln invoked more than 150 years ago: that our nation may heal, and that we may recognize the inherent dignity in one another, and the preservation of our founding principles established in the Constitution.
